Festivals in Benalmadena

Every town in Spain seems to have a brimming events calendar whether that is a festival, celebration or any other type of event. Benalmadena is no exception to this with year long festivities from cultural celebrations and events to traditional and religious processions – all of which breathe life and vitality into this versatile town.
Here we have listed some of the popular upcoming events.
Corpus Christi
Is a wonderful celebration, which involves all the people of Benalmadena Pueblo. Corpus Christi is the Catholic feast that celebrates the presence of the body of Christ in the holy wafer. It is held in June and begins on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday. One of the primary attractions to this celebration is the spreading of flower petals, sweet smelling cypress branches and herbs onto the streets by the people of Benalmadena pueblo on the eve of the procession. The aromas and the blankets of natural colour, transform the cobbled village streets and creates an atmosphere not to be missed.
The Feast of San Juan
June 24th is the day of San Juan. Arroyo de la Miel celebrates from 24th to 29th June with its annual local fair held in the feria ground in Paloma Park. It is a popular fiesta all over Spain with bonfires and fireworks usually starting from midnight on the 23rd. This night is the only night during the year where large open fires are permitted. For good luck, the tradition is to dip your feet in the sea, just after midnight. This is one celebration not to miss out on, the atmosphere is electric with thousands of people on the beaches all along the coast. The firework display in Benlamadena is also something rather special.
La Virgen del Carmen
La Virgen del Carmen is the Saint of seamen, this celebration is known as the ‘Veladilla del Carmen’, and takes place on July 16th with a special mass and then the carrying of the virgin to the sea. The procession leaves from the Church Square, Avenida Bonanza after a mass and then continues down to Benalmadena Port, where it continues by boat. When the virgin reaches the sea, there is a large firework display that is situated on the beach.
