Festival de la Luna Mora
If you are lucky enough to be in Andalucia, southern Spain this September, don’t miss out on the chance to see one of the most magical festivals of the Spanish summer. Not strictly an event in Benalmadena, but close enough for us to include here as we have heard that this is one fantastic event, which of course we will be attending!
The Festival de la Luna Mora is a Music and Art Festival celebrated in the tiny village of Guaro, not too far from Marbella, in the Sierra Blanca. During the festival in the old part of the village all the artificial light is switched off and the village is lit by 20000 candles.
The festival itself spans two weekends every September, this years dates are 11th -12th and 18th -19th.
Here the Muslim community and the Andalucian traditions are combined to give a flavour and taste of culture and an essence of what life was like between the three main religions Christian, Muslim and Sephardi Jews that all lived here in medieval times.
Music brings the festival visitor to experience the delights of the Arabic/Spanish/Sephardi style music and dance, alongside flamenco, belly dancing, theatre and market stalls selling arabian trinkets as well as new age art and jewellery.
The market is open from early on in the morning right through until the wee small hours, the market traders all dress in period costume and offer moorish cakes and tea. Al-Andalus is re-created within a few days, so we can taste and reconnect to the original essence that Spain once was.
Also taking place during these two weekends there will also be concerts in the Villa Guaro.
